The Headlight Restoration Process To Turn Them From Foggy to Clear
Our goal is to get your headlights back to a like-new condition. We use a combination of wet-sanding, polishing, and ceramic coating to deliver great results. Since every pair of headlights is different, some lenses may require more intensive sanding while others are easier to restore. Here’s a general breakdown of the process:
Step 1: Clean and Mask Off the Headlights
We start by thoroughly cleaning the headlights with a rinseless wash, claying the surface to remove contaminants, and masking off surrounding paint to protect it from contact with sandpaper. If we start to wet-sand with a contaminated area, it’s going to affect the overall results.
Step 2: Sand the Headlights
Based on the condition of your lenses, we use sandpaper ranging from 800 to 3,000 grit to refine the surface. The lower grit, like 800, is used to remove the heavy layer of deteriorated clear coat. As we move up higher into the grit sizes, the finer and finer the scratches get.
Step 3: Polish for Clarity
Next, we use a machine polisher to compound and polish the lenses, restoring the clarity and leaving them looking great.
Step 4: Apply Ceramic Coating
Finally, to protect and maintain the results, we apply a durable ceramic coating that shields your headlights from future damage and UV exposure.
Depending on the size of your headlights and the condition that it’s in, the process takes 1-2 hours to complete. We can also restore fog lights for an additional fee if they’re accessible and compatible with the process. Sometimes we may just have to polish them out to the best we can as the condition or surface doesn’t let us sand them.

Can headlights with cracks or scratches be restored?
Yes, in many cases, headlights with minor cracks or scratches can be restored. Some of the smaller scratches are often reduced or eliminated during the sanding process. However, deeper cracks or permanent damage to the lens may remain visible even after restoration.
Are headlights cleaned from the outside or inside?
In 95% of cases, headlight oxidation occurs on the exterior due to the deterioration of the clear coat. Sometimes we get headlights that have condensation or debris inside of the lens and that’s due to a hole or leak somewhere around the headlight. We won’t be able to clean inside them because you’d have to bake the headlights, remove the seal, and open them up.
